What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is a scheme developed by the Australian Government to help fund support and services needed by its citizens living with a permanent and significant disability nationwide. The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency or the NDIA.

The NDIS started rolling steadily was implemented across Australia on July 1st, 2016 and has since successfully become available to all of Australia’s states and territories in 2020. The NDIS was first introduced in the Northern Territory in Darwin in 2017. From there, it has been made available throughout the areas of the Northern Territory, including Alice Springs.

The most current data as of 30 September 2020, states that the NDIS has given support to over 3,000 people with a permanent and significant disability living in the Northern Territory. The data also shows that over a thousand of these participants have received support for their disabilities for the first time.

With the help of the NDIS, residents of Alice Springs living with a disability will have access to much-needed support, services, and products that can help alleviate their everyday challenges and live life as normally as possible.

The NDIS is continuously curating providers, known as NDIS providers to deliver these support, services, and products to their participants. The NDIS understands that to give effective support to people with disabilities, a one-size-fits-all solution is not the answer.

This is the reason why the NDIS introduced the NDIS Plan for its participants to customise where they can pick and choose the NDIS provider that they think can successfully help with their disabilities, help them reach their goals, and address their needs.

Who are NDIS Providers and What Do They Do?

None of the benefits that the NDIS gives to its participants are possible without the help of NDIS providers. NDIS providers are organisations, professional individuals, and even businesses that are registered with and accredited by the NDIS to have the capabilities to provide the much-needed support, services, and products that participants of the scheme require.

The NDIS is continuously curating and crediting its accredited providers all across Australia and its territories. NDIS providers have gone through a rigorous process to become registered with the NDIS to make them qualified with providing their services, support, or products to NDIS participants.

These providers are briefed and understand that not all people with disabilities go through the same set of challenges, require the same set of support, and have the same goals. Like NDIS plans, providers know how to customise the service they provide to participants so that it can fit their individual needs, goals, and challenges.

Standards to become NDIS providers are high and this ensures that participants will be given services, support, and products providers that are approved by the government.

NDIS offers a huge range of variety of NDIS providers in terms of what type of support they can provide to participants. However, not every NDIS participant will have access to some types of NDIS providers as it all depends on the contents of their NDIS plan in terms of their needs, goals, and the nature of their disabilities.

In Alice Springs, some of the types of support, resources, and services that NDIS participants have access to but are not limited to are mental health care, employment assistance, cost-efficient transportation services, home modifications, vehicle modifications, assisted daily living, and many more.

How to Find the Right NDIS Providers in Alice Springs

Participants will have several options on how to choose the correct NDIS provider to include in their plan. It is important to remember that simply picking and choosing a provider from a list that is available in Alice Springs does not guarantee the success of one’s NDIS plan.

NDIS providers will have to work with a range of different NDIS participants with different sets of challenges, needs, and goals, making it impossible for the providers to evenly distribute a level of care and support to each participant.

Participants should prioritise looking for providers that would be the most compatible to work with their lifestyle and how they fit in their NDIS plan. They can do this independently or with the help of an NDIS Manger for participants who require assistance or a partner with the development of their plan.

A great resource for participants looking for providers is the NDIS website. They have downloadable files listing NDIS-accredited providers and their details grouped by their area and territories where they are available.

Tips on How to Choose the Best NDIS provider

Consult a Local Area Coordinator in the Northern Territory

Local Area Coordinators are great sources of information on providers and the support they provided to NDIS participants. They work closely with the participants and their families to determine the best course of action regarding their NDIS and are sensitive to their unique lifestyles.

There are no current Local Area Coordinators in Alice Springs, however, NDIS participants can easily connect with someone from the NDIA for assistance with choosing the best NDIS providers for their NDIS Plans

Do as much research as possible on the NDIS provider

It is important to do as much research as possible on prospective NDIS providers and see if they have the capabilities required for NDIS participants. NDIS participants should have an understanding of important details about the NDIS provider including their values, policies, qualifications, previous client experiences, and the scope of their services to determine if they are compatible with one’s NDIS Plan.

Make sure the NDIS provider understands your NDIS Plan

Although It is not required for participants to divulge the contents of their NDIS Plans to providers, it can be a great decision to meet up with the provider and have a discussion about one’s needs, goals, and challenges to make them better understand the kind of services the NDIS participant is looking for.

NDIS participants can also discuss the costs, durations, and inclusions of the types of support they provide to see if it truly fits in their NDIS plans. A good NDIS provider will be happy to make adjustments in their services to better provide support to NDIS participants and their unique needs.
