Positive Moods is a mental health care provider that offers behavioural support for disabled residents in Alice Springs, in compliance with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). People with disabilities are unfortunately among the most vulnerable members of society, and therefore should have access to high-quality support for their psychosocial needs and protection from neglect, abuse, or harm. We are bent on having a full understanding of why NDIS participants display challenging behaviours, and our mission is to employ evidence-based methods for optimum improvement through our Behavioural Support programme.

In the NDIS Behavioural Support programme, we help build positive behaviours among individuals in Alice Springs who have experienced harm, are at risk of harm, or have caused harm to others. At Positive Moods, we cater to a variety of NDIS participants with NDIS approved funding who may have:

  • Impaired capacities;

  • Mental illnesses;

  • Intellectual disabilities;

  • Acquired brain injuries;

  • Medical challenges;

  • Amongst others

Our NDIS certified psychologists and counsellors work with the client and their caregivers in creating individualised strategies for people with disabilities that are more intensive, client-focused, and results-oriented, all while preserving their dignity and quality of life above anything else. As people with disabilities have more freedom in using their NDIS funding, they get to set their own goals and Positive Moods helps them deliver just that.

In the past, Positive Moods has helped individuals achieve their goals through NDIS Behavioural Support:

  • Increasing community and social participation;

  • Visiting family members for holidays;

  • Better prompting and support of daily care needs such as showering;

  • Improving communication skills;

  • Amongst others

Special Behaviour Intervention Support

We at Positive Moods cater to NDIS participants who displayed challenging behaviours that could cause harm to themselves, family members, carers, and/or support givers. We are focused on understanding the complex nature of behaviours and how to support those who engage in them. Our NDIS specialists are highly qualified to provide specialised intensive interventions in order to replace or reduce the problematic behaviours.

Positive Behaviour Support Plan

Positive Moods NDIS specialists use the research-based Positive Behaviour Support approach where they work with the participant’s family and support system to help them understand why patients display destructive behaviours that might put them at risk and severely impact their life. The goal is to create and implement strategies to prevent those occurrences from happening while teaching them new, more positive skills to effectively communicate their needs.

At Positive Moods, we have worked with countless families and support givers in Alice Springs in developing their behavioural support plan. A behavioural support plan is a document created to reduce the chances of challenging behaviours from happening again. This management plan could help produce successful outcomes for patients between ages 7 and 64 years old, and form a habit of consistency among families and caregivers to sustain the practises recommended by the plan.

Once a behaviour support team is established, all key stakeholders come up with person-centred planning where goals for intervention and other opportunities are discussed. They then talk about the occurrences where the NDIS participant exhibits adverse behaviours, the triggers, the stress factors, and come up with plausible explanations of why they happen. The family and caregivers could also share how they reacted to the situation in the past and see if previous interventions affected positively or negatively to the problematic behaviour of the participant.

Any existing medical and psychosocial assistance the patient has (medications, therapies, and/or counselling sessions) must also be discussed during this stage of the management plan. Having a medical professional outline their symptoms and medical history and sign a letter of recommendation could help the patient get their plan approved by the NDIS.

A range of strategies is then put in place, some of which include ensuring the patient gets what they need (proactive strategies) and keeping the person and those around them safe from harm (reactive strategies). Other methods also include:

  • Improving the individual’s lifestyle so they do not feel isolated

  • Changing their environment in order to have more meaningful and positive social relationships

  • Teaching them new skills to replace problematic behaviours

  • Showing positive reinforcement to patients displaying appropriate behaviour

  • Implementing guidelines for family members and caregivers for responding to adverse behaviours to avoid encouraging them

Sustenance is key to success, that is why it is important to monitor the behaviour support plan regularly. Monitoring may include observation if there are any changes in problem behaviour, achievement of new skills, response to people and environment, and lifestyle outcomes.

At Positive Moods, we also offer Positive Behaviour Support Plan NDIS Ipswich.
