Does NDIS Funding Cover Level 2 Autism?

Autism or also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological, developmental disorder that includes a persistent problem with repetitive patterns of behaviour and activities, social communication, and interaction. ASD is an umbrella term for disorders including Asperger’s Syndrome, Atypical Autism and Autism. According to studies, 1% of the population suffers from a developmental disorder, in terms of ratio that would be 1:100, meaning 1 out of 100 people is affected with ASD. Due to this, the Australian Government created its first national scheme to help people with disabilities which is National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). NDIS provides funding directly to individuals who need support and each plan is tailored according to their specific needs.

The primary objective of NDIS is to support people with disabilities to improve their independence, increase their contribution in social and economic activities, develop their ability to partake with their community, and change their lives, their families, and those who take care of them. To provide this service to Australian citizens and residents, NDIS made a partnership with Positive Moods to make it easier to access the service. Positive Moods have Psychologists and Counsellors throughout Australia who will provide NDIS approve mental health services.

However, not all individuals who have ASD will be given the opportunity for support. Some conditions need to be met to be eligible for NDIS service. To be qualified for NDIS funding, an individual must seek a further assessment from a specialist such as a psychologist, a paediatrician, a speech therapist, an occupation therapist, or a member of a disciplinary team. After the patient has been diagnosed of having ASD with Level 2 or Level 3 severity, that’s the only time they can be approved and more likely to qualify for NDIS funding.

Patients who are diagnosed with ASD Level 2 require substantial support. Those who suffer from ASD Level 2 will have difficulties in interaction for they have a very specific and less interest in terms of socialising. These individuals also tend to show minimal and repetitive patterns of behaviour. In most instances, they will also struggle in verbally and non-verbally communication so they are advised to seek assistance from occupational and sensory integration therapy. For this reason, patients with ASD Level 2 can automatically acquire the available services provided by NDIS.

There are also three standard legal requirements to access NDIS services. First is the age requirement, an individual must be under 65 years of age. The second is a residency requirement, you must be an Australian citizen or meet specific residence requirements. Lastly, the individual must meet disability or early intervention requirements. If your child is over 7 years of age, they will get NDIS funding access through the regular NDIS pathway. However, if your child falls under 0-6 years of age, they can access NDIS funding through the Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) pathway.

The ECEI approach aims to support children aged 7 years old and below who have a developmental disability, and their families or those who take care of them. The ECEI pathway will provide an early intervention program and acknowledge its leads for better and long-term results. They will also use a family-centred approach to form the children and their family's function. Each child's needs are different and may vary to circumstance. Therefore, Positive Moods as a partner of NDIS will provide a tailored support funding plan that will help your children support their needs and goals.

The NDIS funding support is a great help for people with disabilities and has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australian citizens since its implementation in the year 2017.
